Blown glass decoration

Dale Chihuly’s studio is in Seattle, but an exhibition of his work is on display in the UK at Kew
Gardens until October 27 th . If you want to blow your mind or your wallet, visit Kew Gardens
before then … or visit any time to appreciate their well identified collection of trees, and shrubs,
and plants, and examine their hot temperate climate collection under an immense glass house. If
you want the kids to enjoy the day, make sure you take them on the high tree canopy walk that
gives spectacular views over the gardens. Beware of the difficulty of parking: public transport is
probably preferable.
The location for the exterior, dramatic larger-then-life displays have been chosen to complement
the plants around them. The Sapphire Star, Summer Sun, and the Scarlet and Yellow Icicle
Tower are but three of the eleven garden pieces, with an inspiring collection on display in the
Shirley Sherwood Gallery where there are bowls for house interiors too, some for sale at £5,000
a crack (don’t linger on that word with fragile ornaments) they are well worth every penny – if
you have enough! Garden and house ornaments reflect so much about our tastes and priorities,
but to me that does not mean we have to shy away from using them. They can be simple and
inexpensive but still add interest to our vistas. Clay, porcelain, metal, wood, or glass all have a
place: if you have a backyard pool they can provide a different dimension too. An area the size
of Kew Gardens would be an advantage if you use one the size of the Scarlet and Yellow Icicle
Tower.
Chihuly was born in Tacoma, Washington and although his team have exhibited all over the
world, his largest permanent exhibit can be found at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Before
you go, take a look at his work in Calgary at the Winter Garden within Jamieson Place, on the
Plus-15 level of 308 4 Ave. S.W.
